What Is Psychiatric Medication Management With Aetna?
Medication management is more than getting a refill
If you have been prescribed psychiatric medication, you may have wondered what happens after the first prescription.
Medication management is ongoing care. The goal is to understand whether a medication is helping, whether there are side effects, and whether the treatment plan still makes sense as your circumstances change.
Meaningful Psychiatry provides psychiatric medication management for eligible Aetna patients through telehealth in Washington.
What happens during a medication-management appointment?
Your provider may discuss:
- Whether your symptoms have improved
- Any new or ongoing symptoms
- Medication side effects
- Changes in sleep, energy, appetite, or concentration
- Stress at home, work, or school
- Other medications or substances you are taking
- Whether the current dose is appropriate
- Whether a medication should be continued, adjusted, changed, or stopped
Medication management is not simply a prescription renewal.
How often will I need appointments?
There is no universal schedule.
Someone starting a new medication may need more frequent follow-up so the provider can assess how things are going.
Once treatment is stable, appointments may be spaced farther apart.
Your provider will recommend a follow-up schedule based on your individual situation.
What conditions may involve medication management?
Psychiatric medication can be part of treatment for conditions such as:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- ADHD
- Bipolar disorder
- PTSD
- OCD
- Other psychiatric conditions
Whether medication is appropriate depends on the individual patient.
What about the medication itself?
Your appointment coverage and your prescription coverage are two separate questions.
Your insurance plan may have a pharmacy formulary that determines which medications are covered and at what cost.
Some medications may also require prior authorization.
If your medication requires insurance paperwork, our office can help with the clinical documentation required from our side.
Medication and therapy can work together
Medication does not have to replace therapy.
Some patients benefit from medication management alongside psychotherapy. Others may need only one type of treatment.
Your treatment plan should reflect your goals and clinical needs.
For providers considering a referral
If you are a primary-care provider, therapist, or other healthcare professional with a patient who may benefit from psychiatric medication management, Meaningful Psychiatry can discuss referral options and current availability.
We are especially interested in building relationships with Washington professionals who need a psychiatric referral resource for patients who cannot easily access psychiatric care through their existing practice.
