How Much Does a Mental Health Provider Cost With Aetna
How much will mental health care cost with Aetna?
One of the first questions people ask when looking for mental health care is also one of the hardest to answer with a single number:
“How much will I actually have to pay?”
The answer depends on your specific Aetna plan.
Two people can have Aetna insurance and have completely different deductibles, copays, coinsurance, or out-of-pocket costs. That is why understanding your benefits before an appointment can save you an unpleasant surprise later.
Meaningful Psychiatry is in-network with Aetna for eligible services, but your individual plan determines your actual responsibility.
The three insurance terms you should know
Deductible
Your deductible is the amount you may need to pay toward covered healthcare services before your insurance begins sharing costs according to your plan.
For example, if you have a $1,500 deductible and have not met it yet, you may be responsible for more of the allowed cost of a visit than you would be after meeting the deductible.
Copay
A copay is a set dollar amount you pay for a covered service.
Your copay may differ depending on the type of service and your plan.
Coinsurance
Coinsurance is a percentage of the allowed amount that you are responsible for after applicable deductible requirements are met.
Your plan might require you to pay a percentage while the insurance company pays the remainder.
Why in-network status matters
When a provider is in-network, the provider has a contracted relationship with the insurance plan.
This generally means the plan’s negotiated rates and in-network cost-sharing rules apply.
Meaningful Psychiatry is in-network with Aetna for eligible services. However, being in-network does not mean every appointment is free or that every Aetna plan has the same cost.
What should you ask Aetna before your first appointment?
Use the number on the back of your insurance card and ask:
- Is Meaningful Psychiatry in-network for my specific plan?
- Is the provider I am requesting in-network?
- What is my outpatient mental-health deductible?
- How much of my deductible have I met?
- What is my copay or coinsurance for outpatient mental-health visits?
- Are telehealth visits covered?
- Do I need a referral?
- Do I need prior authorization for any part of my treatment?
You can also ask our office about the benefit information available to us.
What if I have a high deductible?
A high-deductible plan can mean you pay more toward covered services before your insurance begins sharing costs according to your plan.
That does not necessarily mean your insurance is not covering the service. It may mean the service is being applied to your deductible.
If you are unsure what a bill means, contact your insurance company and ask how the claim was processed.
Aetna coverage is not the same as the cost of your medication
There are two different questions:
How much does my appointment cost?
and
How much does my prescription cost?
Your psychiatric visit is subject to your medical/behavioral-health benefits. Prescription costs are generally determined under your pharmacy benefit.
Your medication may have a different copay, coinsurance, formulary tier, or prior-authorization requirement.
Questions to ask before starting care
You do not need to become an insurance expert.
You simply want enough information to understand what your plan is likely to cover and what you may owe.
If you are considering psychiatric care with Aetna, start by checking your benefits and confirming the provider’s network status.
For therapists and healthcare providers
If you are a therapist or healthcare provider and have patients who need psychiatric evaluation or medication management, Meaningful Psychiatry can be a referral resource for eligible Aetna patients.
Contact us to ask about current availability and referral coordination.

Meaningful Psychiatry can help with the information available to our office, but Aetna determines the final coverage and patient responsibility.
